Under the leadership of the African People’s Socialist Party, who has led the struggle for the past 50 years fighting for democratic space and anti-colonial free speech, the Hands Off Uhuru Fightback Coalition is pleased to announce the launch of our Latin American front, extending the reach of the struggle to protect and safeguard our right to anti-colonial free speech throughout this hemisphere! 

The newly formed Latin American front joins other international Hands Off Uhuru! Hands Off Africa! committees including in South Africa, Sierra Leone, London and Paris along with those throughout the U.S. 

The Hands Off Uhuru Fightback Coalition enjoys the membership and support of hundreds of organizations and individuals from across the political spectrum who have united with the HOU principles that the right of African, Indigenous, Mexican, Palestinian and other colonized peoples to fight for our liberation is key to the enjoyment and exercise of free speech for all people. This new front opens the space for liberation from colonialism for the people of Latin America struggling against oppressive U.S. backed governments for self-determination.

We salute the heroic Indigenous, African and freedom-loving peoples of Latin America who have repeatedly led the world in the creation of equitable and just societies, including in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua among others. African people have always stood shoulder to shoulder with the liberation struggle of the peoples of the world.

In this period when political rights are being targeted, the HOU Fightback Coalition is a critical mass-based tool created to prevent the colonial government from silencing the voices of African and other oppressed and freedom-loving people in the ongoing fight for freedom, liberation and self-determination.

Chairman Omali Yeshitela has discussed how, “As African people in the U.S., [we] are part of the Revolution of the Americas. [We] are part of the revolutionary process that hungry, poor, oppressed and brutalized people—the hated, despised and spat-upon people—all over the world are trying to make. That is particularly true here in what is called the Americas….”

The coalition is an affirmation that forces from every walk of life and political belief can find unity and purpose in the defense of the rights of African people and the fact that when African people come under attack, everyone’s rights are under threat. We recognize that African people have always been at the forefront of the struggle for civil and democratic rights in this country and throughout the world. This is a struggle that represents the main front against U.S. imperialist war and colonial exploitation of the peoples of the world.

The formation of the Latin American front of Hands Off Uhuru affirms to the world that the struggle of African people to determine their own destiny is a life-affirming quest for all humanity with the goal of creating a world without oppressors and the oppressed, no one at the expense of any other.
